Anatomy of an Avalanche

Anatomy of an Avalanche

Somewhere in Switzerland

Watch as an avalanche propagates across a mountain side. You will see three charges go off, with the resulting plume of snow blowing upwards. The snow fractures from left to right in this sequence. It’s a study in breaking down the flow of an avalanche so that the human eye can make sense of the movement as discreet moments in time, rather than a single motion.

These images are from a Facebook post by Laurent Crettenand, a pilot for Air-Glaciers SA in Sion, Switzerland. Presumably, this is somewhere in the Swiss Alps.
